My family loves to downhill ski. My dad enjoyed being on the ski patrol while he was in college and he required my mother to learn how to ski before he would marry her (jk, kind of). So, during their visit, it was understood that we would spend a day skiing. This way my dad could proudly say he has been skiing in Alaska!
There are 4 downhill ski areas in the local area (none could qualify as resorts). Fairbanks is much more into cross-country skiing for which there are numerous beautiful, world class areas. Each of the military bases has one: Eielson has a tiny one run tube hill and Wainwright has only 4 runs. Then there's SkiLand, north of Fairbanks, which has beautiful views and one 2-chair slow moving lift.
We chose to go to Moose Mountain, northwest of Fairbanks.
Moose Mountain is the place to go when it is really cold. There are no lifts, instead you warm up in a shuttle as you ride to the top. This day was warm however (15 above) - if it is below zero, you do get discount tickets!
I love skiing! Thanks to my mom for watching the kids so we could go!

You guys make me miss skiing SOOO badly! Especially when VA got record-breaking snow storms, all Heather and I wanted to do was hit the slopes. One day we'll get to ski again ...
